(Revealed before Hijrah)
The Surah was revealed early at Mecca. All Commentators of the Qur’an agree on this point. Noldeke and Muir, too, subscribe to this view. Like Surah Az-Zilzal it primarily gives a brief but lucid description of the tremendous convulsions and catastrophic upheavals that would shake the foundations of the world in the Latter Days; the immediately preceding Surah having dealt with the great fight that the Companions of the Holy Prophet had put up against the forces of darkness. The Surah equally may apply to the Day of Judgment greater than which there could be no calamity for disbelievers.
